Common Terminology in the Poly Community

Ethical Nonmonogamy (ENM)
Relationship structures that include agreements that permit outside sexual and/or romantic connections whereby all partners are fully aware of and in agreement about the open relationship structure.

Metamour
A term used to describe one’s relationship to one’s partner’s partner.

Nesting Partner
This term refers to cohabitating partners. In general, this term is used to provide nonhierarchical language for describing the increased level of day-to-day complexity and interconnectedness that comes with sharing a home and related responsibilities.

Nonhierarchical Polyamory
A style of polyamory for which there is no expectation of a power differential between partners. This is in contrast to a primary/secondary structure in which one partnership is considered primary and others are secondary to that relationship.

Primary/Secondary
A relationship structure in which one partnership, the primary one, will take precedence over all others. There can be a large amount of variation in how this actually looks.

Kitchen Table Poly (KTP)
A style of polyamorous relationships were all partners and metamours are encouraged to develop close relationship with one another. The name comes from the idea that everyone can comfortably gather together for activities, such as meals.
